Alma Aleron Turret at Hogwarts

Image

Here's another great Blink 3D environment from George Lippert. Taking his inspiration from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels, George has created a new section of Hogwarts to serve as the headquarters of "Alma Aleron" (the American Wizarding School). The environment is a complement to George Lippert's fan-lit story about Harry Potter's son, James Potter and the Hall of Elders' Crossing. For more information, see the Elders' Crossing website (www.elderscrossing.com). The URL of the Blink environment is www.elderscrossing.com/blink/alma_alernon1.htm.

Amsterdam's Crystal Palace

Image

Ernst Dommershuijzen of Mainstream Netservice has unveiled a preview version of his virtual recreation of Amsterdam's Crystal Palace (the Paleis voor Volksvlijt). The original building, which opened in 1864, was destroyed by fire in 1929. The new 3D model resurrects the building as an immersive, interactive environment which, when complete, will serve as an online meeting space and exhibition hall. Links to the Blink 3D environments can be found here. For more on the Paleis voor Volksvlijt (in English), see this PDF brochure.

Virtual Cistercian Monastery (Danish version)

Image

This Virtual Cistercian Monastery is adapted from an earlier version (available here) for use in a display at the Esrum Monastery museum near Copenhagen. The various parts of the monastery have been labelled with signs (in Danish) that can be toggled on and off by hitting the "L" key. Many of the rooms in this monastery are temporarily closed for renovation. Additional rooms will open when they are ready.

Virtual Egyptian Temple

Image

A 3D-model of a late-period Egyptian temple modelled rougly on the temple of Horus at Edfu, created by Glenn Gunhouse to support the teaching of ancient architecture in the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University. In addition to the structure of the temple itself (rendered as complete, though without all its relief sculptures and painted decoration), the virtual temple also includes a model of a "sacred barque" in its innermost chamber. Dark City II

View of Dark City Skyline

"Dark City II" by George Lippert is a detailed four-square-block scene of an imaginary city of around the year 1935. According to George, "It is a huge city environment meant to be an explorable, immersive themed experience. Localized themed music and audio effects, animated textures, realistically driving vehicles, transparency mapping, scripted object movements, and dynamic elements all work together to enhance the experience." The environment is chat-enabled, and George encourages people to use it as a meeting and social environment. See it at http://www.speedbumpstudios.com/blink/darkcity.htm.
